Grades: 8th to 12th

The Mechanical Foundations with REV DUO course provides participants with the hands-on skills and knowledge needed to design, build, and maintain robotic systems confidently. Through interactive projects and challenges, students will explore the foundational mechanical principles that drive robotics, such as structure, motion, power transmission, and mechanical advantage. Using the REV DUO building system, participants will gain practical experience assembling and testing robotic components while learning to solve real-world engineering challenges.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Build strong, stable, and balanced robotic structures.
  • Understand power transmission, mechanical advantage, and their roles in robot functionality.
  • Explore and design various drivetrains for terrain navigation and obstacle climbing.
  • Gain hands-on experience with tools, hardware, and mechanical systems using the REV DUO kit.
  • Develop problem-solving skills through mini-projects and unit challenges.

Course Units:

Unit 1: Strength, Stability, and Balance with REV DUO

  • Learn how to assemble stable and reinforced robotic structures.
  • Explore concepts of center of gravity and balance in robot design.
  • Apply skills in the Unit Project: Riverbed Crane to build a stable and functional robotic structure.
  • Hands-on activities include creating reinforced bases and 3-dimensional structures.

Unit 2: Transmissions and Mechanical Advantage with REV DUO

  • Discover how motion is transmitted and how mechanical advantage impacts speed and torque.
  • Assemble and test motorized fans with various gear and chain configurations.
  • Build a transmission system for the Unit Project: Riverbed Crane, focusing on mechanical motion.
  • Activities include creating faster and stronger fans using gear trains and sprockets.

Unit 3: Drivetrains with REV DUO

  • Understand drivetrains and their components, such as motors, gears, wheels, and chassis.
  • Explore different drivetrain configurations for terrain navigation and payload handling.
  • Design a custom drivetrain capable of climbing obstacles in the Unit Project: Obstacle Climbing Drivetrain.
  • Mini-projects include building 2-motor and 4-motor drivetrains, traction and omni wheels, and mecanum wheel systems.
